Amazingly, it was not until the 19th century that Icelanders started to use the wheel. The country was rough and the people were too poor to start building roads, at least not until times changed for the better and the economy began improving after a long period of stagnation. Therefore, the horse was more important than elsewhere in Europe, both for work and transportation, until the middle of the 20th century.
